have some tunes in mpc format does anybody know of a good (free) bit of s/ware to convert em to mp3.

try the Cheetah Audio Converter(link!), despites the name, it is as good as hell. if it won't solve yer prob, you should try using Sony Sound Blaster [img]wink.gif[/img]

Cheers Joni - will give that a go. Daz - hadn't heard of mpc before -a mate left a cd-r round the house whilst I was out watching the boxing - so didn't get a chance to ask about mpc

If it plays in say, Media Player, maybe you can
use Media Player to rip it to .wmp, it's the same
format as .mp3, more or less.

If you had money to splash around, I'd suggest
getting Audition, because that'll import anything
(and then 'save as' mp3 for you), but I just
checked Audition and saw nothing for .mpc.
(Alternatively, if you did have Audition, and
you were able to play the disc in Media Player,
you could open both software, make sure your
soundcard is clicked to record 'What You Can Hear'
or 'Wave' or whatever it's called on your PC,
press 'Record' in Audition, 'Play' in MP and
Audition would record it, allowing you to export
to mp3 afterwards.)

If you get really stuck, send me the disc and
I'll sort it out.

.mpc files are musepack files, just another compression format like mp3. when it first came out they claimed it was the future of audio compression, having higher sound quality at the same bitrates as mp3 but it never really caught on.

this will convert it for you. first download the main program then go to the codecs page and download the codec for MPC[ .mpc, .mp+, .mpp]

this used to be a freeware program but now you have to register in 30 days to continue to use the mp3 encoding.

Ditto Ogg Vorbis. I remember DL'ing OV, trying out
a few skins, liking it, but then remembering:
'I don't care how well-compressed it is. The dif-
ferences between that, .WMP, and .MP3 are so

If anyone reading this wants to make a million:
develop an mp3 player which is about the size of
one of those USB flash cards which people normally
hang around their neck, and charge next to nothing
for it. Stick in a 1G's worth of memory and never
worry about paying the rent/mortgage ever again.

Although, globally speaking, different countries
and different demographics are evolving at differing
rates - and people like Marky, for example, still
swear by OV. Despite Adobe (who've just questionably
bought our Macromedia [One name. One standard. One
monopoly. One voice. One Adobe. One Big Brother.])
Corel is still outselling Illustrator in Germany.
